Every September I get invited up to Kettering, as a trustee of Heroes on the Water, to attend the annual Pike Anglers Convention where we give a talk, and put up a stand displaying what we do. Not far from Kettering is a lovely small reservoir named Daventry, known for its pike fishing. Whilst in the neighbourhood I thought it would be a sin not to pop by and cast a lure or two.
I had arranged to meet a good friend Martin (also a trustee for HOW) at the lake around the mid morning mark. The weather wasn't the best and it was blowing a good one, so a slow breakfast killed some time, as the focast was saying it would calm down around lunch time. Martin was already braving it out on the water, but it had paid off for him as he had already landed a few jacks.
The forecast was unfortunately wrong! The weather showed no sign of improvement, but there were a few sheltered areas to hide from the wind, so I rigged the yak up, changed into my drysuit, and got ready for a launch,
Once afloat I started to troll a lure that was known to be a killer on this water but after a good few up and downs of the resevoir wall it was to prove it wasnt the lure's day. It was hard work paddling up and down with the wind blowing constantly and was becoming tedious with no takes on the lure. So I decided to change to a small smiler a lure that caught me my very first pike three years ago on Llangorse lake.
I started trolling amonst some weed beds where Martin had already picked a jack up and Bang! the rod was over and fish on! the lure had done the trick again. Nothing huge but a pike and at around 6 lb in weight it gave a lovely bit of sport on the light gear.
The afternoon was similar to that of the morning, involving lots of paddling with no fish apart from the odd miss. It was nearly time to head in when we decided to have another one down and up back to the carpark along the reservoir wall again. Once I had paddled around fifty yards in the troll down the wall my rod was hit or was it a snag as it was doubled over in half a fine tell tale of a good snag but it wasnt to be it was another good take with a pike and a lot better than the first one. After a bit of a play and a dam good scrap I managed to get it to the boat and out of the water when the dreaded shake of the head was done which sent the treble hook flying in my direction hooking me under the arm and a lost fish with no picture.
This was to be the last fish of the day and with not much time before the light faded we decided to head back and go and find our Hotel. Hopefully I will have a few more out of it next year.
