It has been a long time since I was paddling a playboat! After competing in freestyle for several years I wanted to do something different and more challenging or better said, I wanted a new challenge.
I barely have been in a Freestyle boat since I quitted competing in freestyle several years ago. The only exceptions were the Whitewater Grand Prix and a day here and there on the Ottawa River last summer.
To me freestyle now is not so much about the feature any more, but mostly having a good time with friends playing around in the water. Last week I headed to Bremgarten, Switzerland. We were lucky with the water level as it has been to high for most of the summer and it finally dropped down last week.
Bremgarten is one of the few playspots in Europe I find worthwhile to join a visit :). It’s a sweet wave right at the edge of the city center. With a good crew of people, sunny weather a surfboard, freestyle boats and my slalom boat, we had a wicked time surfing and playing around on this wave.
With her father running a kayak school and an older brother and sister already hooked on paddling, Martina had pretty much no choice than to become a kayaker. She grew up in the small seaside village of Schoorl, just to the north of Amsterdam, spending her teenage summers working as a kayak instructor for her father or following the European freestyle circuit.
