Hosted on the world famous Ottawa river in Canada. The Ottawa XL takes place in the spring time when the water levels are highest from the snow melt. The events consists of two stages, A big wave freestyle event and a high volume boater cross race.
The big wave freestyle event took place on Gladiator, possibly the worlds most intimidating wave due to its nature and what lies below it. Record high water levels saw Gladiator on the high side of good, which made it even harder to catch but what it did mean is that you could get the biggest passes of your life.
This wave is definitely a one or two trick wonder. It's comparable to the mega ramp in skateboarding where riders will get the biggest air of their lives but only be able to throw a few tricks whereas a smaller wave is much more comparable to the half pipe event where trick after trick can be thrown. That being said I was stoked to land a big crossbow airscrew and clean pan-am on this huge, unpredictable wave. Which put me into fourth place overall.
The next day was the boater-X. Due to record high levels the hole at the top of Coliseum was pretty closed out and despite some strong arguments from the competitors eventually they had us race from below the top hole named 'White Face Monster'. It was still a great race but any mistake would cost you dearly as you just didn't have the time to correct and make up time in some places. This is exactly what happened with me and my buddy Nick Troutman – we got off to a bad start, managed to make it back to the front and then had a huge crashing wave explode on us and put us in the back of the heat. Unfortunately I didn't advance to the next round but thats the nature of boater-X, sometimes it doesn't go to plan. It's still an awesome experience to race head to head against such motivated kayakers.
Huge thanks to all the organisers for putting on an awesome event! Stoked to compete in it again next year. Bren
