Taking place in the historic little town of Steamboat, Colorado, the Yampa River Festival has some amaizing heritage too. With old school legends Kurt Casey and Chan Zanzig both living and actively paddling in the area and helping to make the event a success.
We arrived late the night before the event started and spent the evening sessioning the local playspot. Usually it's a small hole but the area was experiencing high water and we had a great little wave to surf the evening away with.
The next day the creek race started and in true Demshtiz style we decided we should go freestyle instead of practice or learn the lines, allthough we did manage to sneak a couple of practice laps in a half-hour before the event started. It was a great little section with lots of moves to make and many rocks to avoid. I finished in eigth place.
Freestyle took place on saturday, I was stoked to be back on a wave again as were most of the other competitors. My best trick of the event was a Ka–Y (blunt to pistol flip). I had one really sweet ride which was enough to put me into 1st place with my bros David Fussili and Matt Dumoulin just behind me.
Overall it was one of my favourite events to date. Huge thanks to the local Steamboat river community for putting on such a great show, really hoping I can make it back for next year! See you on the water, Bren
