A word on all the good stuff

Technology

We like to make things better. New ideas, new materials, and new ways of making things all allow us to push things forward. Here are some of the features and technology we put into our gear.

I am certified

These PFDs pass ISO 12402-5 (watersports) and ISO 12402-6 (paddlesport) standards. The majority of our PFDs have up to 20% more buoyancy than the ISO/CE standard and our whitewater models have up to 40% more buoyancy than the 50 N required. Palm were the first to make PFDs to these ISO standards, as part of our drive to make safer gear for everyone.

CE approved

Our safety hardware and helmets belong to the CE group of PPE (personal protective equipment) and are certified to the required European Conformity directives.

ICF registered

These products are registered with the International Canoe Federation and meet their requirements for canoe slalom racing.

Flex Fit

A major innovation in PFD development: bonded into pre-formed shapes, the buoyancy foam curves around your body for unparalleled comfort and freedom of movement. This also allows us to tailor foam panels for a women’s specific cut without compromising buoyancy. Maximum floatation with minimum bulk. Try a Flex Fit PFD on and the benefits will be immediately apparent.

Comfort Fit

Layered sheets of soft foam conform to your body shape keeping the PFD comfortable and secure.

CORDURA® fabric

Fabric with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, and high resistance to tears and abrasion. We use CORDURA® for the seat and knee areas of technical outerwear and for other high wear gear such as PFDs and throwlines.

Removable chest harness

Our chest harness can be reversed, left-to-right, on most models. It fastens using a Fixlock buckle with a load spreader; closing firmly yet releasing quickly in an emergency. Strong 38 mm nylon webbing is mounted high up the back of the PFD for stability under load (tested to 2.5 kN)with a welded stainless steel O-ring for a cowtail or to clip a karabiner.

Specifications on the  Chest Harness product page.

Trimming your Chest Harness to length

3D anti ride-up waistbelt

A grippy rubber finish prevents your PFD from riding up when in use, and the adjustable waistbelt is positioned on the inside of the buoyancy foam panel for full contact around your waist.

Failsafe shoulder straps

A continuous loop of webbing (tested to 3.2 kN) runs through to the PFD down to the 3D waistbelt for security under load. They tighten without bunching thanks to the enclosed pulley system. Excess webbing can be stored in strap keeper pockets on top of the front panel of the PFD.

  1. Continuous strap pulley system – Adjustment straps for tightening the shoulder strap are separate. You can be lifted by the shoulder strap, and even if a buckle fails, you’re still securely fastened in.
  2. Bar tack stitching into 3D waistbelt – Sewn into the 3D waistbelt with bar tack stitching (like the stitching on our Safety Tape). The shoulder straps and waistbelt make a secure harness.
  3. Exceeds ISO 12402 tests – We test our shoulder straps to failure under wet and dry conditions. All of our Failsafe shoulder strap PFDs such as the FXr are rated to 3.2 kN.

Hydration bladder compatible

These garments have a drink bladder compartment, allowing you to quench your thirst hands free, without opening your spraydeck or pockets.

Drop down seat

A key feature on our female specific full body suits is a rear relief opening that drops down without the need to take off any other gear.

Colour coded sizing

These garments have coloured webbing and fabric panels according to size, to make fitting easy for centre or commercial use. Check the PFD and jacket sizing tables for details.

XP 4-layer fabric

Our high performance 4-layer fabric is engineered for extended durability, extra waterproofness and great breathability.

  1. Supplex nylon 6 woven face fabric has a great soft feel and is highly durable. A DWR (durable water repellent) treatment prevents the fabric from becoming waterlogged so that the fabric stays breathable.
  2. A hydrophobic, microporous polyurethane coating is applied to the face fabric. The pores are too small to allow water droplets to pass through, but large enough for water vapour to pass through to the outside air.
  3. A hydrophilic polyurethane membrane laminated to the hydrophobic coating transfers water vapour molecules along hydrophilic chains to the coating.
  4. The nylon 20 denier tricot mesh lining protects the waterproof membrane and disperses moisture to provide the largest surface area for moisture absorption and transfer.

Latex neck

This stretchy natural rubber neck gasket inside the collar minimises water ingress, keeping the inside of the garment largely dry even when fully immersed underwater.

Glideskin neck

Our stretchy and grippy, Glideskin neoprene neck gasket is a great alternative to a latex seal; almost as dry, but more comfortable for frequent use or salt water paddling. An ideal option for those with a latex allergy.

Twin waist

Jackets and pants have an inner skirt in addition to the adjustable outer waistband. The twin waist minimises water ingress between your jacket or pants and spraydeck.

Amara leather

An extremely tough and durable synthetic microfibre leather, which has a soft feel. The suede-like Amara fabric is used to reinforce high wear areas on in our heavy-duty work gloves.

YKK BDM brass coil zip

The dive industry’s standard; brass coil zips are renowned for durability and watertight performance. With air tightness up to 300 mbar and lateral chain strength of 500 N, the YKK BDM brass coil zip is the workhorse of waterproof zips.

YKK AquaGuard zip

A splashproof zip with a polyurethane tape to keep the rain out when paddling. AquaGuard zips have no sealed ends and are not fully waterproof when immersed.

TiZip MasterSeal zip

Pressure tested to 500 mbar, these zips are still watertight but are more flexible, making them more comfortable and easier to operate than brass coil zips. Made from thermoplastic polyurethane with extra strong plastic zipper teeth and a salt water resistant metal slider for long lasting performance in all environments.

NeoFlex

A super thin 4-way-stretch neoprene bonded to a Thermospan liner. Great as a stand-alone layer in warm conditions or underneath a paddle jacket when it gets colder. Stretchy, comfy, and versatile.

NeoPrene

This high quality 100% Chloroprene rubber is durable and provides great insulation from the cold. We use a range of face fabrics and finishes for comfort and abrasion resistance, tailored to each NeoPrene garment.

UPF 50+

An ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 50 allows only 1/50th of the UV radiation from the sun to pass through. In other words, it blocks 98% of the UV radiation.

Channel Flow

Perfect for baselayer fabric, Channel Flow’s instant wicking design draws moisture rapidly to the outside of the garment away from the skin.

Waffle fleece

Waffle fleece has air channels to allow excellent breathability and ventilation within the fabric, while remaining well insulating.

Pontetorto fabric

Italian fleece specialists Pontetorto make warm, supple fabrics renowned for their soft, natural feel, and for being both highly elastic and resistant to snagging and pilling. Pontetorto’s Tecnostretch waffle fleece is Bluesign certified.

Polygiene odour control

Wear more, wash less. A permanent fabric treatment which inhibits the bacteria responsible for that unpleasant damp gear smell. Polygiene’s Bluesign approved treatment is manufactured in the EU using low concentrations of silver salt recovered from recycled electronics.

Thermofibre lined neoprene

A high pile fleece lining makes this neoprene exceptionally warm and comfortable, while keeping the thickness and weight of the fabric to a minimum.

Mesh Skin neoprene

A grippy rubber surface for the chest panels on wetsuits and side panels on neoprene pants, which keeps you in place inside the seat of your kayak or paddling your board out through the surf.

Small Diamond neoprene

A textured nylon face fabric adds abrasion resistance in wear and tear areas, without compromising the neoprene’s stretch.

Powertex neoprene

A strongly woven nylon face fabric with a grid structure that has great abrasion resistance and durability for knees and seat panels.

Supratex neoprene

Nylon reinforced neoprene that’s supple and stretchy, yet holds its shape, maintaining an excellent fit for your spraydeck.

Titanium neoprene

A very thin and flexible titanium coating added to the neoprene reflects body heat back toward you, reducing heat loss.

Amortex neoprene

A tough but flexible aramid fibre weave in the face fabric of the neoprene gives outstanding puncture and abrasion resistance whilst maintaining stretch.

Nytex neoprene

The outer layer of this neoprene is armoured with a smooth, tightly woven high-density nylon to provide long term durability and an excellent fit.

KNytex neoprene

Made of the same smooth, high density nylon weave as Nytex, reinforced with super tough Kevlar® fibres.

Glued and blindstitched seams

Neoprene is glued together along an edge and then stitched without piercing the inside layer of the fabric, making the join watertight. We use these seams for cold water wetsuits and neoprene gear where water needs to be kept out.

Vibram

Our Multitendo sole provides the ultimate grip in challenging terrain. The rubber compound provides excellent grip on wet rock, whilst the sole is designed for traction in mud and debris, which are easily dispersed from the open contours.

Diamond Traction sole

Our sole pattern was developed with paddlers in mind, using a rubber with the perfect balance of flexibility and grip. It will fit nicely inside most canoes and kayaks, and is sturdy enough for portaging and scouting.

Twin Tuff sole

A pre-flexed and cushioned midsole for underfoot support, comfort and balance. A shock pad in the heel keeps a spring in your step on the toughest walk-ins.

Flex Direct sole

A highly flexible, low profile outsole, which will fit in even the smallest kayak. These soles are designed to give good contact with your boat alongside protection for walking.

Stabilising strap system

Adjustable velcro straps across your instep (one point adjustment) or instep and heel (two point adjustment) keep you from sliding around in your shoe. The strap system provides a snug and secure fit when you’re swimming in moving water or walking over muddy ground.

O-ring seal

Keep your deck up and water out. Our unique waist tube has a conical, grippy neoprene ring, cleverly made without a seam.

Gripsil

A grippy, durable coating which provides excellent grip and a watertight seal on your kayak’s cockpit.

Rand

Developed from our bombproof 2009 rand deck, and updated for current cockpit designs. This heavy-duty rubber rand hugs your cockpit rim more tightly than shockcord, holding the deck on in the most extreme conditions.

Elastic shockcord

A bungee cord sewn to the spraydeck, which fits tightly around your cockpit rim. Shockcord spraydecks are very dry on a wide range of cockpit sizes, since they are highly stretchy, and they are easy to put on and quick to remove in an emergency.

Adjustable shockcord

To fit a wide variety of cockpit widths and lengths, some of our touring and recreation spraydecks have adjustable shockcord fastenings. By tightening the rear adjuster buckle, the shockcord circumference can be reduced to fit on smaller cockpit rims or for a tighter fit on larger ones. The shockcord runs through a tough polyurethane sheath around the deck, which helps it grip.

Magnetic closure

Fidlock closures are a joy to use; magnetically self fastening, rock solid when closed, and they open easily one handed, even with cold, numb fingers.

Quickclip

Follow the clean line principle – a webbing attachment point on our throwbags makes easy to clip a karabiner into the business end of our bags. The rope inside is fastened with a rethreaded figure of eight, so you can remove and reattach the bag whenever you need to.

Rustproof Seadog clip

Our towlines may feature different attachment hardware to hook the line onto a towing object. The Seadog plastic clip is for saltwater use. On other towlines no clip is attached so that you can decide on which hardware to use.

Roll down closure

The simplest and most efficient way of sealing a waterpoof storage bag. To seal it, compress the bag and let trapped air escape, then press the flaps of the opening together, and roll them down four times. Clip the buckles closed and you’re done.

Compression valve

Air is trapped inside a waterproof storage bag can add quite considerably to it’s size and makes it harder to pack away. A compression valve allows a waterproof bag to be deflated once closed and sealed.

Transparent fabric

Small items can be hard to find when they are buried underneath a lot of equipment in your bag. See what you’re looking for through transparent fabric panels in your waterproof bag.

Nylon 6 glass fibre reinforced blades

Our premium paddle blades are made from injection moulded nylon, reinforced with glass fibre, keeping them stiff and light. This combination has exceptional tensile strength and toughness for use in whitewater and surf.

Polypropylene glass fibre reinforced blades

Our allround paddle blades are injection moulded from glass fibre reinforced polypropylene; these blades are lightweight but durable. Glass fibre adds stiffness and strength to the polypropylene.

Wood

The blades on our wooden canoe paddle are made from dark walnut blended with blonde ponderosa pine for a distinctive look. We then finish them off with a glass fibre reinforced tip for durability. The ovalized shaft is made from fir for a smooth and efficient stoke.

Carbon-glass shaft

Twelve layers of spun carbon (60%) and glass fibre (40%) make this shaft light, strong, and stiff.

Glass fibre shaft

Twelve layers of spun 100% glass fibre make this shaft lightweight, strong and flexible for all-day paddling comfort on the water.

Adjustable ferrule

Our adjustable ferrule is snappy and positive – it’s precision moulded from glass fibre reinforced nylon 6 and capable of 360 degree adjustment in 15 degree steps for left or right handed paddling. (Licensed Werner Ferrule Technology)
